which are commonly found on scarabs, as well as those of Ptolemies and the Roman Emperors, have been included.

For facts and figures connected with the British Occupation of Egypt, the Rebellion of the Mahdi and Khalifah, the Reconquest of the Sûdân, the Nile and irrigation works in Egypt and the Sûdân, I have drawn largely from the official reports of Lord Cromer, Sir Eldon Gorst, Lord Kitchener, Lord Allenby, Sir William Garstin, Count Gleichen and Captain H. G. Lyons, and on the non-official publications of Sir R. Wingate, Slatin Pâshâ, the late Father Ohrwalder, Charles Royle, Naum Shukêr Bey, and others. The plans and illustrations given in this Handbook are derived from authoritative sources, among which may be mentioned the works of Coste, Prisse d'Avennes, Lepsius, Howard Vyse, Mariette, J. de Morgan, the great Description de l'Égypte, the Survey of the Palestine Exploration Fund, the Mémoires of the French Archæological Mission in Cairo, etc.

The note on the age of the Temple of Amen at Karnak printed on pp. xviii-xx should have appeared in the section of this Handbook which treats of Karnak, but this was already in type when the pamphlet published by the Egyptian Government came to hand.

My thanks are due to Messrs. Harrison & Sons, Ltd., for the care which they have bestowed upon the printing of this work, and to their staff, and especially to Mr. L. Lovett and Mr. H. Andrew.
