CHAP. VII. Of God's covenant with man.

HE distance between God and the creature is so great, that although reasonable creatures do owe obedience unto him as their Creator, yet they could never have any fruition of him as their blessedness and reward, but by fome voluntary condescenfion on God's part, which he hath been pleased to express by way of covenant a.

II. The first covenant made with man was a covenant of works b; wherein life was promised to Adam, and in him to his posterity c, upon condition of perfect and personal obedience d.

III, Man by his fall having made himself uncapable of life by that covenant, the Lord was pleased to make a second e, commonly called the covenant of grace: Wherein he freely offereth unto sinners life and salvation by Jefus Christ, requiring of them faith in him, that they may be saved f, and promising to give unto all those that are ordained

may hurt a man as thou art, and thy righteousness may profit the son of man. Luke 17. 10. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, fay, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do. Acts1%. 24. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God fending his own fon inthe likeness of finful flesh, and for fin condemned sin in the flesh. Rom. 3. 20. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his fight for by the law is the knowledge of fin. v. 21. But nov the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets Gen. 3. 15. And I will put enmity between theeand the woman, and between thy feed and her feed; it shall bruise thy head, andthou shalt bruise his heel. Ifa. 42. 6. I the Lordhave called thee in righteoufness, and I will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thǝe for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles.
