PREFACE TO THE TWENTY-FIRST EDITION.
In consequence of the progress of the Arts and Sciences since the fist Editions of the following Work were published, and the liberal patronage bestowed upon it by the Public—it has been deemed expedient to make a thorough revision of the whole, so as to embrace the latest improvements and discoveries in the different departments to which its diversified subjects refer. The present Edition has accordingly been carefully revised in every portion of the Work, and very large additions made to its several departments; besides the introduction of nearly two hundred Woodcuts, illustrative of its multifarious subjects. The department of Natural History has been considerably enlarged, by various additional illustrations. The department of GEOGRAPHY has been extended to more than double the space it formerly occupied. The articles ASTRONOMY, NATURAL PHILOSOPHY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSIOLOGY, HISTORY, PRINTING, MARINER'S COMPASS, TELESCOPE, AIR BALLOONS, STEAM NAVIGATION, ETC., have likewise been very considerably enlarged.
