Q. What is HISTORY?

A. We are to understand by History, a credible narration of the past transactions of states and nations.

Q. Upon what does the credibility of history depend?

A. It depends altogether upon the competency, the fidelity, and the accuracy of the authorities from which it is derived.

Q. What is required, in order to obtain a clear and distinct understanding of the transactions which history relates?

A. A correct knowledge of the times when, and of the places where, those several transactions took place.
