Lætior. At speculæ jam descendamus ab arce
Aeria; nam venit ineluctabilis hora;
Migrandum eft; en! dudum isto mihi monte locati
Caftra movere parant Vigiles: en! dira coruscat
Fulgor atrox gladii, flammæque a fronte minaces.
Non jam fas cunctari; age, fomnos rumpe maritæ:
Olli ego turbatos animi per mollia fluctus
Somnia compofui, placidæ prænuntia pacis;
Ipsa dabit jam sponte manus. Tu tempore dextro,
Participem facias, tibi quæ data, lucis; at unum.
Hoc iterum atque iterum repetas, ut pectore in alto
Figatur stabilita fides, de Semine ituram
Fæmineo diffusa hominum per sæcla salutem.
Hinc lucem ad fummam, quæ sera accedet, eandem
Usque fidem colite unanimes; deflete peractum
Haud luctu immerito crimen; fed pleniùs altâ
Lætitiâ exhilarent fausti solatia finis.

Conticuit; montisque fimul faftigia linquunt:

Of speculation; for the hour precife
Exacts our parting hence: and see! the Guards,
By me incamp'd on yonder hill, expect
Their motion; at whose front a flaming sword,
In fignal of remove, waves fiercely round.
We may no longer stay: go, waken Eve;
Her also I with gentle dreams have calm'd,
Portending good; and all her spirits compos'd
To meek fubmission; thou at season fit

Let her with thee partake what thou hast heard;
Chiefly, what may concern her faith to know,
The great deliverance by her Seed to come,
For by the woman's Seed, on all mankind:
That ye may live, which will be many days,
Both in one faith unanimous, though fad,
With cause, for evils past: yet much more

Deinde alacri celerans studio præcurrit Adamus
Conjugis ad thalamum: dimiferat illa soporem,
Hisque virum excipiens dictis haud tristibus infit:

Unde redis, quòque hinc dudum via duxit, Adame,
Haud animi me fallit; ineft Deus ipse sopori
Scilicet, & liquidam pandunt insomnia lucem:
Qualia mî, præsaga boni, Indulgentia mifit
Numinis; ex quo me lassam, exhaustamque dolore,
Sternebam fomno. Quin duc age protinus; in me
Nulla mora; hìc, alibi est, quocunque solo, Paradifus,
Tu modò te comitem dederis mihi: Te fine, Conjux,
Non hìc, non alibi est, non terrarum omnibus oris.
Tu mihi res cunctæ, loca cuncta sub ætheris axe,
Unicus; ob mea qui scelera hinc dimitteris exul.
Hæc tamen, hæc abeunti animum solatia mulcent
Fidentem: Quanquam per me omnia perdita latè,
Defluxit tanta immeritæ mihi gratia cœlo,
Per me promissum repararit ut omnia Semen.

He ended; and they both descend the hill :
Descended, Adam to the bow'r, where Eve
Lay sleeping, ran before; but found her wak'd';
And thus with words not sad she him receiv'd:

In me is no delay; with thee to go,
Is to stay here; without thee here to stay,
Is to go hence unwilling: thou to me
Art all things under heav'n, all places thou;

Whence thou return'st, and whither went'st, I Who for my wilful crime art banish'd hence. know:

For God is also in sleep, and dreams advise;
Which he hath sent propitious, some great good
Presaging; fince with forrow, and heart's distress
Wearied I fell asleep. But now lead on;

This further consolation yet secure

I carry hence; though all by me is lost,
Such favour I unworthy am vouchsaf'd,
By me the promis'd Seed shall all restore.

So spake our mother Eve; and Adam heard
Finierat.

Dixerat: & lætis dicta auribus haufit Adamus;
At nil refpondit: namque ollis maximus Hospes
Jam propior stetit; adversique a culmine montis
Flammea præfcriptam stationem adiere Cherubum
Agmina, suspensis per humum labentia plantis.
Ut nebula, ex fluviis se effundens vefpere sero,
Pervolitat densas liquido pede lapsa paludes,
Agricolamque premit reducem, calcemque suburget.
Undantes a fronte faces fublime vibratus
Numinis evomuit gladius, ceù crine cometa
Terribili lugubre rubens, cœlique benignam
Temperiem invertit: torrenti incanduit atrox
Igne vapor, quantus fitientibus incubat Afris.
Corripit inde manu noftros utrâque Parentes

Nuntius, increpitatque moras; portamque ad eoam
Ducit agens, celsaque iterum de rupe jacentem:..
Ocius in campum; tenues dein fugit in auras.

Th' Arch-angel stood; and from the other hill
To their fix'd station, all in bright array,
The Cherubim descended; on the ground
Gliding meteorous; as ev'ning mist,

Ris'n from a river, o'er the marish glides;
And gathers ground fast at the laborer's hecl,
Homeward returning. High in front advanc'd,

Fierce as a comet; which with torrid heat,
And vapors as the Libyan air adust,
Began to parch that temperate clime: whereat
In either hand the hast'ning Angel caught
Our lingring parents; and to th' eastern gate!
Led them direct; and down the cliff as fast,
To the fubjected plain; then disappear'd.
They looking back, all ch' eastern fide beheld
Eoas

Eoas, sua tam nuper lætissima rura,
Flammivomo mucrone vident ardescere; formisque
Obsessam horrificis portam, & flagrantibus armis.

Naturæ imperio lacrimas misere, repente
Detersas: Patuit spatiosis tractibus orbis

Terrarum, requiem optatam dulcisque recessüs

Quà peterent fibi cunque loca; & Deus adfuit auspex.

Tum vaga, lentaque, ducentes veftigia, palmis

Connexis, folos Edeni abiere per agros.

Of Paradise, so late their happy feat,
Wav'd over by that flaming brand; the gate
With dreadful faces throng'd, and fiery arms.
Some natural tears they drop'd, but wip'd them
foon:

The World was all before them, where to chuse
Their place of reft, and Providence their guide.
They, hand in hand, with wand'ring steps andflow,
Through Eden took their folitary way.
