ITEMS FROM STATIONS.

SANTIAGO, September 14, 1887. REV. J. M. ALLIS:-In Concepcion it will be necessary to vacate the chapel we have been using, as the building is to be torn down and reconstructed. There is a strong feeling that it would be wise to have our own church building there, and so arranged as to have a school in connection with it. Some money has been offered. We shall direct Mr. Jorquera to work out the problem and see what can be done, and when we have the facts we shall report. Probably nothing can be arranged till after the annual meeting. In Valparaiso there are held the usual services with growing interest. There have also been meetings held in the Almedral, a separate part of the city; also in Vina del Mar, a suburb five miles away.

Regular services are held in Quillota, and since the last itinerary trip through the Aconcagua valley other services in the cities mentioned above. We hope to make them more regularly. There was some opposition in Los Andes, but the authorities have faithfully promised to render full protection, and we will see that the one who is to preach does not go alone. It needs at least two. It should be mentioned that a young ladies' mission band in Valparaiso has rendered excellent service this year. The profits went the last year to the purchase of a bethel for seamen, this year for the Chile church. They raised about $900, Chile currency, or $450 gold. A part was spent in getting a new organ for the church, and part in fixing the roof of the church, and the rest, a small sum, in starting a Sunday-school library.

EDUCATIONAL WORK PROSPERING.

The winter has been exceedingly rainy in the south, so that for some time railroads could not be used. The severity of the rains has prevented the proposed visit to Angol and Chillan, but now as spring draws nigh they will be renewed.

The Instituto Internacional makes a fine showing. The cholera at the beginning of the year had a bad effect in keeping the scholars from coming, but now the number is greater than ever before. The outlook for this school is very good. There is every reason to believe that it will make steady gain toward self-support. The epidemic of cholera. last year hindered the possibility of making much

show this year. The state of the school's finances will admit of our securing from the United States and from Germany the teachers needed to supply the places of those whose contracts expire. The present contract for the rental of the building used will expire in about two years. It would be wise, if the Board could see its way, to put this school and the seminary work in a permanent building to be owned by the Board.

The Escuela Popular of Valparaiso is to be put in fine shape this year. We are to secure the services, as we hope, of a well-recommended and skilled teacher from Madrid. We have made him a proposition. If we can secure him we shall have not only a good principal for the school, but a valuable helper in mission work, and one who will make this school more of a gospel institution than it has been possible heretofore with the teachers accessible. We hope to meet any extra expense the bringing out of such a man will involve by funds raised on the ground. We shall have to vacate the premises next January, but have been fortunate to hold them so long without rent.

DAKOTA MISSION.

AMONG THE CAMPS.

PINE RIDGE, DAK., Oct. 4, 1887. REV. CHARLES G. STERLING:-This field is a large one. It calls for more men to work it thoroughly. I would be glad of an English co-worker. Otherwise there should be native helpers stationed at the camps. The camps call for far more visits than I can make. The people in one camp in particular are begging for a church and for regular services.

I made a visit lately to the Cheyenne camp, twenty miles distant on the White river. I held services through an interpreter, in which interest was shown by those present, and afterwards had a conference with Little Chief, the head chief of this people. He begged for a school and a church. These people have neither. They have been nomadic in their habits, but seem to be becoming more settled, and are building themselves houses along the White river. There are about five hundred of the Cheyennes here, and it is not impossible that the Tongue-river Cheyennes, who are more in number, will be transferred to this point.
