One pew in front of the pulpit is surmounted by a canopy supported upon carved columns. This is the pew appropriated to the use of the President of the Republic or the Governor of the Commonwealth. The occupant of the pulpit is the Rev. John Witherspoon, D.D., appointed the year before by the Synod of New York and Philadelphia, at the time of its adoption of the new constitution creating the Assembly, to preach the opening sermon on this occasion, and to preside over the body until a moderator should have been chosen. The preacher is now sixty-seven years old. Rev. Ashbel Green, D.D., thus describes him: "In person he is of middle size, fleshy, with some tendency to corpulence. His limbs are well proportioned and his complexion fair, his eyes strongly indicative of intelligence. His eyebrows are large, hanging down the ends next his temples; occasioned, probably, by a habit he had contracted of pulling them when he was under excite ment. His hair covers the whole scalp, and at its lower extremity is confined in an artificial curl or buckle. His countenance unites gravity with benignity in its general expression, and this makes the change in its aspect when he frowns more sensible and impressive. The features of his face possessed much of what painters dominate character. His appearance is graceful and venerable, and in promiscuous company he has more of the quality called presence than any other individual with whom the writer has had intercourse, Washington excepted." The preacher gives out his text, 1 Cor. 3: 7, "So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase." He is evidently a Scotchman, though the Scotch in his tone and accent detracts nothing from the effectiveness of his delivery. To all appearance he speaks extemporaneously, his manner being so easy and free as to convey no intimation that his thoughts are not the children of the occasion and his language the creation of the instant. In fact, however, every word of that sermon has been written, and comes from memory rather than from the moment. The impression of pure extemporaneousness of thoughts and words is made more sure by the facility with which he weaves in illustrations that occur to him as he speaks, and by his custom, a custom he warmly commended to others, of reading from the Bible the passages of Scripture he quotes, however familiar those passages may be to him. In this "his manner resembles that of the lawyer citing his authorities." "His action never exceeds a graceful motion of his right hand and the inclination of his body forward when much in earnest." His discourse is replete with "good sense, powerful reasoning, warm affection, and a solemnity of manner, especially toward the close, such as is calculated to produce the best effects of sacred oratory." His prayers "are plain in language, correct, methodical, abounding in choice Scripture phrases, and uttered with the appearance of deep devotional feeling." John Witherspoon was born in Haddingtonshire, Scotland, some fourteen miles east of Edinburgh, February 5, 1722. His father was a godly minister of uncommon ability. His mother, a lineal descendant of John Knox, was a model Christian mother, the influence of whose instruction, prayers and example was seen in the early conversion of her child and in the stalwart character he displayed through life. Endowed with excellent natural abilities, Witherspoon at the academy and through the whole course of his education easily took rank among the brightest and best scholars of his class, and at the divinity school we are told "in perspicuity of style, in logical accuracy of thought, in taste and in sacred criticism" he stood without a rival. He possessed "a clear intellect, a calm judgment, an indomitable strength of purpose, and a resolute, unflinching courage," with which were combined "that conscious integrity and religious feeling which made him among his associates in the church what Washington was in the field, and secured him the respect and veneration of all.” Witherspoon was a many-sided man, theologian, educator, preacher, pastor, statesman, a man of genial humor and a keen satirist. |
